The core documents
Almost every institution asks for:
- A certified copy of your South African ID document or smart ID card (both sides)
- Your latest academic results — Grade 11 final results or Grade 12 June/September results
- Your final NSC certificate or statement of results, once released
- Proof of residence (some institutions and residences)
- Parent or guardian ID copies and proof of income if you also apply for funding
What does 'certified' mean?
A certified copy is a photocopy stamped and signed by a Commissioner of Oaths — for example at a police station or some post offices — confirming it is a true copy of the original. Many institutions only accept certifications that are less than three months old, so get copies certified close to the time you apply.
Scanning tips
Scan or photograph documents on a flat surface in good light, make sure all four corners are visible and the text is readable, and save each document as a separate PDF or JPG. Keep file sizes small (under about 2–5 MB) so uploads don't fail on slow connections. Name files clearly, for example 'ID_Thabo_Mokoena.pdf'.
Special cases
International applicants usually need a passport, study permit and a SAQA or USAf evaluation of foreign school results. Applicants with a disability may submit supporting documents to access support services. TVET college applicants who have not finished matric can apply with their latest school report (Grade 9 or higher for NC(V)).
