10 Common Application Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

Small errors that delay or cancel applications — and the quick checks that prevent them.

Mistakes we see most often

  • Using an email address or phone number you don't check — offers and requests go unanswered.
  • Typing your name or ID number differently from your ID document.
  • Uploading blurry, cropped or uncertified documents.
  • Choosing only highly competitive programmes with no realistic backup.
  • Not checking subject minimums — meeting the APS but missing Mathematics or Physical Sciences levels.
  • Applying after the closing date or leaving it to the last day when portals are slow.
  • Forgetting usernames, passwords and reference numbers for university portals.
  • Ignoring requests for selection tests, interviews or extra documents.
  • Paying unofficial agents who promise guaranteed admission — no one can guarantee a place.
  • Forgetting to apply separately for funding such as NSFAS or bursaries.

A two-minute final check

Before you submit, re-read your personal details, confirm every required document is attached, take a screenshot of the confirmation page and save your reference number. Then set a weekly reminder to check your application status until you receive an outcome.

This guide is general information only. Requirements, fees and dates change — always confirm with the official institution or NSFAS before applying.
