National Certificate (Vocational) — NC(V)
NC(V) is a three-year programme at NQF Levels 2, 3 and 4, with one level completed per year. It combines fundamental subjects (English, Mathematics or Maths Literacy, Life Orientation) with vocational subjects in a field such as Office Administration, IT & Computer Science or Electrical Infrastructure Construction. A Grade 9 pass is the minimum entry requirement. NC(V) Level 4 is at the same NQF level as matric.
NATED / Report 191 (N1–N6)
NATED programmes are split into N-levels. Engineering studies (N1–N6) run in trimesters of about 10 weeks per level, while business and utility studies (N4–N6) run in semesters. After N6 you need 18 months (business) or the required workplace experience (engineering) to qualify for a National N Diploma. N4 business programmes usually require a matric certificate.
Occupational programmes
Many TVET colleges are shifting towards QCTO-registered occupational qualifications, such as Electrician, Plumber, Welder, Diesel Mechanic or Software Developer. These combine theory, practical training and workplace learning and lead to a trade test or occupational certificate.
Which one should I choose?
Choose NC(V) if you are leaving school after Grade 9–11 and want a full qualification; NATED if you already have matric and want a business or engineering N Diploma; and an occupational programme if you want to become a qualified artisan. Always check which programmes a specific college is enrolling for in the current intake, as offerings change.
