Don't panic — you have options
Falling a few points short of a programme's minimum APS is common, and there are many recognised routes into further study. The key is to act quickly once results are released, because late-application and space-availability windows are short.
Options to consider
- Apply for an extended (foundation) version of the programme, which usually has a lower APS and adds an extra year of support.
- Choose a related diploma or higher certificate, then articulate into the degree later.
- Apply to a university of technology or comprehensive university with lower requirements for a similar field.
- Enrol at a TVET college for an NC(V), N-programme or occupational qualification.
- Rewrite subjects through the Second Chance Matric Programme or the May/June supplementary exams to improve your levels.
- Consider a gap year to work, volunteer or study short courses while you reapply.
Focus on the right subjects
If you are still at school, identify which required subjects are holding you back. Improving Mathematics from 58% to 60% moves you from level 4 to level 5 — that single point can make you eligible for many more programmes.
